I seem to whinge a lot about shops closing down so I decided to keep quiet about Appetito going under. I’ve not even speculated (much) as to whether Costa coming to Catford had a knock on effect. But the loss of the Chinese restaurant King’s Chow Mein is something I have to mention. King’s has been around for at least 15 years (if not more) and it made for an easy take away choice on the way home. Sad to see it go.

Not sure about the need for security measures unless Catford now has a squatter problem. Mmm. Kings Chow Mein Catford closed

As one door closes

Back in June I put on my Chicken Little hat and moaned about the sky falling in when Risky and Internacionale closed their doors. With WHSMith closed too, the Shopping Centre was looking a little bleak (some would say it looks bleak regardless of the empty shops). Anyway, two new shops have popped up. Give a warm Catford welcome to Store Twenty One and Blue Inc.

I had a quick browse round Store Twenty One, it sells clothes and an assortment of household items.

Blue Inc hadn’t opened yet but a notice in the window says you can order stuff from their website and get it delivered to your local store.

Why has Kings closed? Best Chinese in the area!

I don’t know. One minute it was there, next it was gone. 🙁

What’s the time table on the Milford Towers/ Tescos development?
So much consulting and inertia.
Whole Chinese cities have been built in the decade this nonsense has been going on.

The only local shopping area less attractive than those Catford ‘shopping centre’ units is Leegate. And that development at least is deep into its consultation phase.

IIRC MIlford Towers is due to be pulled down some time next year (I cannot wait!!). I don’t know about Tesco and the shops though. I should dig around and see if there is a detailed plan.

Charging for parking and closing the public loo kills the heart of Catford. Councils should not see cars as cash cows. We go to mainly Lewisham for shopping.

Eros House got put up for sale. The vendors appear to have massively hiked up the rent before putting the property on the market, so that prospective buyers think the commercial rent yield is higher than it has been. Problem is, that rent level is unsustainable for those businesses.

At least that’s what I heard on the street.

El Poco Mexico is gone as well, I liked that place! It was always mostly empty though

I’m really disappointed to hear that the family run Kings Chow Mein has been forced out by property developers and speculators. This is one of the highest quality chinese restaurants in the whole of London offering low salt and MSG free food if requested. The loss of neighbouring Appetito, the fourth cafe to disappear within 15 years in the same site, and the future loss of Mekan, is not in line with the concept of urban regeneration; Lewisham council have done well to win bids from the lottery funds for regeneration of tarmac to pave a semi-pedestrianised Broadway, however the neglect and lack of support for speciality shops like Kings Chow Mein and non-franchised cafes like Appetito due to rent hikes, is going to clone Catford into an ugly Beckenham… Read more »

Mekan is closing too? Is this for sure? They always seem busy when I go there, it seems crazy and a real shame they would close their doors.

Also, I have to mention the restaurant called ‘La Italia’ is wonderful, just because it can seem quiet at times. The location is undercover and may seem daunting to some but the food is great and the owners give a lovely warm welcome.

I loved kings chow mein best Chinese food I’ve had. Customer service was very good, does anyone know whether the owners are setting up elsewhere?

King’s Chow Mein wasn’t forced out by rent hike. There was an incident…
