Sweet Charity, with music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Dorothy Fields, was directed and choreographed for Broadway by Bob Fosse, and premiered in 1966. The musical, based on Federico Fellini’s screenplay for Nights of Cabiria, follows the romantic trials and tribulations of New York dance hall hostess Charity Hope Valentine, and was nominated for 9 Tony Awards.
Claire Goad stars as Charity, alongside a talented cast of local performers playing a host of characters including her cynical girlfriends at the dance hall (Danielle Dowsett and Rochelle Bisson), the neurotic and shy Oscar (Nathan Pollpeter), Italian movie star Vittorio (Nye Pascoe) and the groovy evangelist Daddy Brubeck (Kemal Ibrahim). With the hilarious script by Neil Simon, the audience is sure to fall in love with Charity’s limitless spirit and optimism.
Director, Sheila Arden says ‘one of the most exciting and challenging things about directing Sweet Charity for Artform is re-imagining the show in the small studio space at the Catford Broadway Theatre – scenes evoke and underpin Charity’s quirky, funny and vulnerable journey to find love, and are marked by some of the best-loved songs (If My Friends Could See Me Now, There’s Gotta Be Something Better Than This, I’m a Brass Band) and most iconic dance numbers (Hey Big Spender, Rich Man’s Frug, Rhythm of Life) in musical history.
