Once an item has been registered, if it is then stolen, it can then be easily identified by police on the National Mobile Property Register (NMPR) with a higher chance of the item being reunited to its rightful owner.
Residents can get their bikes and property marked outside the Halfords branch in Catford Road on Wednesday 4 December from 3-6pm. Other property marking events will take place in Catford Market on Wednesday 11 December from 10am-4pm and outside Lewisham Shopping Centre on Friday 13 December from 10am-3pm.
Councillor Janet Daby, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “As we approach the festive season it is even more important that residents – and particularly our young people – take this opportunity to protect their valuables and make it harder for thieves to ‘cash in’ with another criminal or to a willing purchaser of the item.”
Chief Inspector Graham Price of Lewisham Police, said: “We are doing everything we can to tackle robbery, burglary and other theft offences. We are pleased to be working in partnership with the local authority to help people safeguard their treasured belongings, and would encourage everyone to take these simple steps to reduce the risk of theft, and maximise the chance of return if the item does get stolen.”
