The South London Club Card, a local discount card set up to support local independent businesses across South London is celebrating its 1st year anniversary and to mark the occasion they have released a beautiful, brand new card design!
South London Club Founder Thomas Page says: “It’s been an exciting first year for us. We’ve managed to support over 650 of the best independent businesses South London has to offer and have grown our tribe of conscious, caring South Londoners to over 5,000 members. Our new card is inspired by the amazing landmarks found across South London and was designed by local South London artist Prints Harry”
With the recent increase in business tax rates for small local businesses in London, Thomas believes this has already had a great effect.
Thomas said: “The recent business rate tax adjustment has hit South London’s small businesses disproportionately harder than the rest of the UK, due to it being tied to the price of property in London. We’ve been told by multiple business owners in South London, that this is the reason behind them closing down over the past year. It just wasn’t feasible for them to remain open anymore. Which is a shame. Local businesses provide character, quality, diversity, opportunity, and jobs to our local area and need our support more than ever. It’s important we don’t price out local businesses otherwise we’ll lose the value, unique identity and opportunities they bring to our neighbourhoods.”
Alongside the new card, the South London Club has developed quickly over the year into an accessible directory of local businesses, a community hub, and offers a wide range of exciting new merchandise and artwork that promotes and celebrates all things South London.
