Over 40 talented young musicians and actors from across Lewisham have collaborated to create a brand new performance piece for the Tate Exchange space at the prestigious Tate Modern Gallery. The scratch performance and open rehearsals take place as part of the annual Lewisham Live Festival.

Coordinated by Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, Animate Orchestra and Greenwich and Lewisham Young Peoples Theatre (GLYPT), the performers have drawn inspiration from ‘The Unfinished Conversation’, an artwork by British artist, John Akomfrah. In their performance work, they will explore identity as something multi-layered and ever evolving. Tate visitors are invited to drop in, join the conversation, enjoy a chance encounter and perhaps get involved in the show itself!

With over 5.8 million people visiting the Tate Modern every year, performing there is an excellent opportunity for this group of young people to showcase the creative talents of Lewisham.

BBC Orchestra’s Sarah Freestone and theatre director Naomi Cortes, shortlisted for the Brian Way Award, have led the young people for five weeks in sessions exploring common practices and how best to collaborate across different art forms.

Natalie Clarke, Festival Coordinator states “There is so much creative talent amongst our young people here in Lewisham, and these open rehearsals and performance sharing’s really highlight that. Not only do young people involved in Lewisham Live Festival get to work alongside a whole host of professional mentors, and hone their skills in cross-artform performance, they also get to showcase their talents in some of London’s most prestigious venues, including this year at Tate Modern!”

Animate Orchestra & GYLPT’s Story #1, takes place on Saturday 17 February with open rehearsals from 12-5pm and a sharing of work at 4pm. The event is free to the public. Visitors to the Tate Exchange can also experience innovative music and dance scratch performances by Trinity Laban`s Creative Collective and The Albany`s Young Producers over the weekend.

These events are all part of Lewisham Live Festival 2018, which creates unique opportunities for children & young people in Lewisham to showcase and develop their talents in music and dance.
